Opioid Prevention
UMDHU can provide free Narcan to anyone over 18 years old at all our offices.
Keeping unused or expired medications in your home can create
risks for your family, community, and environment. The Upper Missouri District
Health Unit (UMDHU) encourages all residents to safely dispose of medications
through North Dakota’s Take Back Program or by using a DeTerra medication
disposal bag—available free at any UMDHU office.
Proper disposal helps to:
-
Prevent misuse and addiction.
Many people who misuse prescription drugs get them from friends or family
medicine cabinets. Safely removing leftover medications helps prevent
misuse before it starts.
-
Protect children and pets.
Unused medications can be mistaken for candy or snacks. Getting rid of
them keeps everyone in your home safer.
-
Protect our environment.
Flushing medications or tossing them in the trash can contaminate water
systems and harm wildlife. Safe disposal keeps North Dakota’s land and
water clean.
-
Support community safety. Every
time you use a Take Back site or DeTerra bag, you’re helping reduce the
risk of prescription drug abuse in our communities.
Find a Take Back location near you or stop by your local UMDHU
office to pick up a free DeTerra disposal bag and safely get unwanted
medications out of your home.
